Roos van Dalen, trotse eigenaresse van dansschool Up and Down in Arnhem en Doesburg.

Bij Up and Down zijn meerdere leerlingen actief via het Jeugdfonds Sport & Cultuur.

The Youth Fund for Sport & Culture Amsterdam enables many children in the city to participate in cultural activities, such as dance, music, and drawing lessons. However, we know that some children have extra talent and passion and are eager to further their artistic development. For them, the cost of additional lessons, performances, or training can quickly become prohibitive and hinder their development.

That's why we're starting a special Talent Fund Culture For motivated students with great perseverance and talent. This fund is designed to provide additional support to children from low-income families who already participate through the Youth Fund, enabling them to further develop their skills in areas such as dance, music, theater, art, or literature. This additional contribution allows children to follow a more extensive curriculum or participate in special talent classes, further enhancing their skills and potentially even preparing them for arts education. In this way, we bridge the gap between regular lessons and arts (preliminary) education. The Talent Fund for Culture is a pilot program of the Youth Fund for Sport & Culture Amsterdam.

Terms and Conditions

  • The additional compensation applies for one season (01-08-…. to 31-07-….) and can be requested again annually;
  • The student has been approved for a cultural application from the Youth Fund Sport & Culture Amsterdam in the same season;
  • The student has demonstrably taken lessons for several years in the cultural activity for which the talent allowance is requested;
  • A maximum of 5 students per institution (provider) can receive a talent allowance from the talent fund per year;
  • The application is submitted by a provider/teacher who is already affiliated with the Jeugdfonds Sport & Cultuur Amsterdam;
  • The application can be submitted all year round;
  • The Cultural Talent Fund has an annual budget. Applications are considered as long as the available budget is sufficient. Once the budget is exhausted, no new applications can be accepted that year. This will be announced on this information page and in our newsletter for cultural providers. No rights can be derived from submitting an application.

Assessment criteria

  • The student is requested to write a letter of motivation that includes the ambition and a clear development path;
  • The teacher is requested to prepare a letter of recommendation containing a cost overview, an explanation of the teaching package and how it contributes to the further development of the student;
  • Talent assessment is carried out by external experts in the art discipline to which the application is directed.

Submitting the application

  • The application can be submitted after there has been confirmation of approval for a cultural application in the same application season;
  • The teacher must submit the application for the talent allowance via this form containing:
    1. Motivation letter of the student;
    2. Letter of recommendation from the teacher;
    3. (Link to) portfolio/(image) material for talent assessment via the external panel of arts teachers (for example a video) and agreement to share this material with this panel;
      NOTE: For group performances, please clearly indicate which student is involved.
    4. Consent form signed by parent(s)/guardian(s) for the processing of the data.

Judgement

  • If all conditions are met and once all documents are received:
    • The application assessed by the Youth Fund Sport & Culture Amsterdam;
    • The student's talent is also assessed by an external panel of experts from the cultural field;
  • The Youth Fund Sport & Culture Amsterdam aims to provide feedback within four weeks of receiving the application, with priority given to fully submitted and well-substantiated applications.

Award

The budget allocation is paid to the provider(s). Therefore, the student does not receive any money, and no claims can be submitted (for example, for expenses already incurred).

This program is a pilot program of the Youth Fund Sport & Culture Amsterdam, initially running for two years. Any extension of the program will be subject to an evaluation, which will assess the progress of the supported talents and the fund's effectiveness.

Last Sunday, June 29, the DeLaMar Theater was bursting with energy, courage and talent during the performance From Passion to Stage, organized by the Youth Fund Sport & Culture Amsterdam. Over 100 children from our target group performed for a room full of parents, intermediaries/Meerkracht, and the fund's affiliates. They came from, among others, A'DAM Music School, THAT! School, Global Dance Centre, ISH Dance Collective, Platform C and Southeast Community Choir Young.

For many children, it was their first time on such a large stage. Exciting, but above all, very special. Host Cheyenne Toney hosted the whole thing and concluded with her song Sunflower, together with all the children who had performed. A wonderful ending to an afternoon full of talent, fun, and pride.

The performance demonstrated the power and diversity of culture, from classical string orchestra to hip-hop and spoken word. It not only inspired the audience but also brought together accompanists and sparked new collaborations between the various cultural providers. The aftermovie is in the works and will be available soon – a great opportunity to look back on this inspiring afternoon!

Why I became an ambassador for the Youth Fund Sports & Culture Almere

I became an ambassador for the Youth Fund for Sports and Culture Almere because I believe in equal opportunities for every child. Sports and culture aren't luxuries—they're basic needs that help children develop, discover their talents, and face life with confidence.

When our family was going through a difficult time, I needed people who believed in me as a child. People who opened doors and saw opportunities where others drew boundaries. So I know firsthand what it means to be allowed to participate. To be able to go to dance class, or play volleyball with your friends – even if there's no money at home.

The Youth Fund removes financial barriers and opens up new worlds. That's what I want to be a part of. Because every child has the right to pursue their dream. Because talent shouldn't be a matter of money, but of space and trust. And because I hope to inspire others to contribute with my voice and my story.

Together we ensure that children in Almere aren't left on the sidelines, but are on the field – or on stage. Because that's where they belong.

Although the number of registrations for sports activities has returned to pre-coronavirus levels, we see that registrations for cultural activities, such as music lessons, are lagging behind.1 BMC's findings show that financial barriers still play a significant role, especially in music lessons, where the personal contribution is too high for many families. To lower these barriers and give more children the opportunity to participate in music lessons, we have launched a pilot program in collaboration with the Municipality of Amsterdam with nine music providers, temporarily increasing the maximum reimbursement.

Pilot duration

The pilot program is only valid for applications submitted to the Youth Fund for Sport & Culture Amsterdam and to the 10 selected providers (see "Participating Music Providers" below). The program runs from August 1, 2023, and has been extended until at least July 31, 2026.

Important information for parents and providers

  • Applications submitted between August 1, 2023, and February 29, 2024: Maximum reimbursement €650
  • Applications submitted between March 1, 2024, and July 31, 2024: Maximum reimbursement €325
  • Applications submitted between August 1, 2024, and March 1, 2025: Maximum reimbursement €650
  • Applications made between March 1, 2025, and July 31, 2025: Maximum reimbursement €325
  • Applications submitted between August 1, 2025, and March 1, 2026: Maximum reimbursement €650
  • Applications submitted between March 1, 2026, and July 31, 2025: Maximum reimbursement €325

When submitting your application, please enter the maximum amount. If you can enter a maximum of 480, we will manually adjust the application to 650. The provider will only invoice you for the actual costs.

Participating music providers

Please note: the increase only applies to music lessons, not to other activities such as dance.

Lucas and Arthur Jussen are one of the most sought-after piano duos of our time. The brothers are also among the Netherlands' most renowned ambassadors for classical music and have a successful international career. Despite their busy lives, filled with concerts and recordings, they are also ambassadors for the Youth Fund for Sport & Culture.

The brothers grew up in a family where everything was available. Tennis, classical music, pop music. "That was completely natural. But we also realize that for many children, it's not at all natural. The fact that they get the chance to participate through the Youth Fund is fantastic. You know, when you get the chance to experience different facets of life, like sports, music, social contacts, that's how you grow. You get to know the world better. And you don't always have to do something with it, but it's important that you experience it and have the freedom to choose."

Hoera!

Choose your Art Houten is made possible in part by a contribution from the municipality of Houten.

Dance teacher, coach and choreographer Nicholas 'Shaker' Singer

We are proud to announce that we welcome Nicholas Singer, also known as Shaker, as ambassador of the Jeugdfonds Sport & Cultuur Amsterdam.

The Liberian-born Shaker came to the United States at age 6and He moved to the Netherlands with his mother. Shaker: "I've always felt like a second chance to make the most of life every day." And he does! As the owner of Global Dance Centre, one of the largest dance schools in Amsterdam, he inspires many young people every day to follow their passion and develop their talents.

Passion

Shaker learned to play piano and guitar, but he always really just wanted to dance. His mother wasn't allowed to make dancing her profession because, in African culture, dancing is seen by some as something done for fun, or to seduce, Shaker says. But once in the Netherlands, his mother introduced him to the dance and music school: "I see it this way: my mother put me on the first step of the stairs and gave me the impetus to walk up." Finally, at 16, he gotand his mother's permission to fully pursue his passion, he put everything aside for dancing.

Raising awareness for the Youth Fund for Sports and Culture

This year, Shaker is coaching a new television program: Project Dance, in which unknown people showcase their dance talents, and 10 participants are selected and coached to the finals. "I immediately thought: this is the moment I have to become an ambassador for the Youth Fund for Sports & Culture. I want to raise awareness for the fund and inspire children to explore the art forms of dance and music. I hope parents and children think: maybe I can achieve something through dancing too!"

Shaker continues: "I want to make my voice heard because children get far too little exercise, and I speak the language of parents who have too much on their minds due to all sorts of problems. Financially, but also with other concerns." As an ambassador, Shaker hopes to reach children who sit in their rooms thinking, "I can't do it, I don't dare, it's not for me," and that they will finally try and take that first step. Even if it's just one.

It takes a village to raise a child

This African proverb is the basic idea behind the concept of Global Dance Centre, Shaker: “We have to do it together: listen to the voice of the school, the parents, the members, the teachers and everyone who cares about the school. There are clear rules, together we look after each other, together we form a kind of community“The school's DNA is passed on, as many alumni return to teach,” he says.

Dance school with a global character: everyone welcome

Shaker chose the name Global for his dance school because everyone, regardless of culture or country, should be able to dance at the school: hip-hop/street dance, African dance, dancehall, jazz, and ballet. "It's a dance school for children and young adults, but I also have a 79-year-old woman who does African dance," Shaker says. He adds that the first final performance at the Bijlmer Parktheater was one of the highlights of his life so far: "All those waving children on stage with all those parents in their Sunday best with flowers. That connection with parents and children—I really managed to create that."

Shaker's dream: a breeding ground for talent

"My dream is to transform a building somewhere in Amsterdam Zuidoost into a home where young people can engage in activities like dancing, singing, presenting, and so on," says Shaker, "a breeding ground for talent. An open house where the established order comes in to scout talent. Let the encounter happen; we need to find each other; come and see all that talent." His final message is: "Young people, if you want to achieve something: work hard, be yourself, show individuality, willpower, and your good intentions," says Shaker.

Pay attention to every child

Kick- off Programma
