Sjeng Schalken: 'You learn to win and lose through sports'

Former professional tennis player Sheng Schalken is an ambassador for the Limburg Youth Sports Fund. He is inextricably linked to Dutch tennis. He reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon for three consecutive years and has challenged many top-ten players throughout his career.

Sjeng remains very active in sports. He has his own clothing line, Sjeng Sports, and regularly coaches tennis at a professional level. Despite this busy schedule, Sjeng also makes time for his ambassadorship for the Limburg Youth Sports Fund. "I think this is the best fund there is."

Exercising together shapes your character

All children should have access to sports. Playing sports together builds your character. You learn to win and lose. Both are beneficial for your development. Not just as an athlete, but especially as a person. It's especially important for children from poor families that they don't become socially isolated. Being part of a sports club makes them more resilient and stronger.

Over the years, I've come to know the Youth Sports Fund as a solid organization. It's staffed by skilled people who truly strive to achieve their full potential. I'm convinced that every penny raised is spent optimally. And every minute I get to dedicate as an ambassador is a minute well spent.

Exercise is a way to clear your head

The coronavirus crisis has taken a toll on everyone this past year. But Sjeng is counting his blessings. “The knife just passed us by. Tennis was allowed to continue, with restrictions, of course. My daughters are horseback riding; that was also possible. So in that respect, our family still had an outlet. Sports are a way to clear your head. Wouldn't you want everyone to experience that liberating feeling?”

So Sjeng, you're still a passionate tennis player? "Of course. If I don't, I'll get stiff and fatter, haha."
