Intermediair Sultan: 'When children tell me how sports are going, I melt'
Intermediaries are essential for ensuring that all children can participate in sports and cultural activities. We regularly feature one of the Gelderland Youth Fund's top performers in short questions. This time, Sultan Duda.
Tell us something about yourself?
I've been working as an administrative assistant at the Islamic primary school in Harderwijk since 2005. Besides my administrative duties, I'm the chair of the parent council (OR) and the school's confidential counselor. This means I have frequent contact with both parents and students. In 2017, I registered as an intermediary with the Youth Fund for Sports & Culture.
What does your work as an intermediary look like?
Because I've worked in education for so long, it's practically a natural progression. I talk to parents and students daily, both at school and in private. These conversations reveal which families are eligible for the Youth Fund. I then provide additional information about the Youth Fund, including in Turkish if needed. This is how you can see how happy families are.
Why are you an intermediary?
I've taken over the role of intermediary from a former colleague. Because I'm considered the "spider in the web," my team and I felt it best for me to become an intermediary. As a Harderwijk native, I'm a familiar face in our neighborhood. This makes it easier for parents to get in touch. Many parents have no idea what the Youth Fund entails.
Why is the Youth Fund for Sports & Culture so important?
Sports and exercise have a positive impact on children's brain structure, among other things, and on their executive functions such as working memory and planning skills. Every child is unique and deserves access to sports and culture.
What is your best moment?
When a child starts playing sports, I ask after a while how things are going. The conversation between us is often wide-eyed and the child smiles—a truly melting moment. And the parents' gratitude.
Do you have any tips for other intermediaries?
It is important to remain accessible. And it is good to make it clear to parents/guardians that the intermediaries work in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
What is your wish for the future?
May the Youth Fund for Sports & Culture continue to exist in this way for a long time to come, may it grow in recognition, and may there be equality for all children!
