Week against Child Abuse
The 9th edition of Child Abuse Prevention Week begins on Monday, November 15, 2021. Using the theme "...closer than you think," extra attention is being drawn to this complex and persistent problem. The theme "...closer than you think" raises awareness that abuse can also occur nearby and that sometimes you are closer than you think. It encourages self-reflection, eye-opening, and awareness.
"...closer than you think" can be interpreted differently by everyone, making it a topic for all of us: professionals, organizations, parents, people with lived experience, and everyone else. For example, consider: "Help, closer than you think" for victims, or "The solution, closer than you think" for those around them. But also: "Support, closer than you think" for perpetrators. Their behavior often stems from something, and it's important to offer them a helping hand to prevent further escalation.
Birgit Op de Laak, chair of the Limburg Youth Sports Fund, is an ambassador for the Limburg Movement Against Child Abuse. Birgit wants to raise awareness for all children who are not safe (at home). She has expressed the need for this vigilance and the need to stop it in a speech. Letter to the Limburg volunteer.
I'd like to extend a special appeal to all child welfare fund intermediaries to be extra vigilant about this important issue. Often, it only takes one person to stop child abuse.
Child abuse won't stop on its own. We'll do it together!
