Rap workshop by Jermain Bridgewater at Language Center Het Element

On Monday, June 7, group L from Language Center Het Element in Amersfoort received a rap workshop from Jermain Bridgewater They are the lucky winners of a campaign by the Utrecht Youth Fund for Sports & Culture, where school classes could register to win a Meet & Greet and demonstration with one of the fund's ambassadors.

Every Child Can!

The Meet & Greet is part of the campaign Every Child Can!In recent months, the Youth Fund for Sports and Culture has made it clear that all children can participate in sports and cultural activities. Financial worries don't have to be a barrier for parents. The campaign raises awareness among teachers, gym instructors, and other primary school staff about the support the fund can offer.

Rhythm, rhymes and rapping

Jermain begins the rap workshop by explaining the history of rap and its various styles. He also plays some of my own work. Then, the students work on counting bars and the art of rhyming. At the end of the workshop, under Jermain's guidance, they create a real rap song with the theme "Vacation." The children were very enthusiastic and, according to Jermain, have real talent.

Language development is important

Language Center Het Element is a school for students between the ages of 12 and 18 who have just arrived in the Netherlands and don't yet speak Dutch fluently. "Language development is paramount for these students," says teacher Alwin Braal. "For several years now, I've been working as an intermediary for the Utrecht Youth Sports & Culture Fund. You see how much children benefit from being able to participate in sports or take music lessons. Dutch is spoken at the club or association, which helps them master the language even faster."

Everyone should be able to participate

The Utrecht Youth Fund for Sports and Culture expects the coronavirus crisis to lead to an increase in the number of children in their classrooms growing up in poverty. This means that more and more parents can no longer afford their children's sports club memberships and cultural activities. And yet, children facing financial stress at home benefit so much from an outlet. The Utrecht Youth Fund for Sports and Culture ensures that these children can continue to participate.
