Cultuur@Cruyff Courts Tiel lets children discover art and culture

From August 15th to 20th, there's something happening every day at Cruyff Court in Tiel as part of Cultuur@Cruyff Courts. From graffiti to lip dub and from painting to capoeira. All activities are free. Ingrid Zaaijer from the organizing cultural center, Zinder, is looking forward to it. "We're going to give children a really fun week, but it doesn't stop there. After that, we'll also be taking workshops to schools!"

Introducing children to arts and culture is paramount for Ingrid and her co-organizers. "For many children, attending arts and culture events isn't a given. That's why we're reaching them, with Cultuur@Cruyff Courts and the ZinderZomerweken (Children's Summer Weeks). There, they discover what arts and culture can do, and what they enjoy. If you enjoy painting, it's a new way to develop and express yourself. You don't have to be a Van Gogh right away; anyone can do it!" This is the second time that activities have been organized as part of Cultuur@Cruyff Courts, and the programming has been informed by last year's experiences. "We've combined things that were popular then, like graffiti, with something new, which has become the lip dub. We also wanted to do something with sports, and capoeira is both an art form and a sport."

Reaching even more through schools

With financial support from the municipality of Tiel, it's possible to visit schools with guest lectures after the campaign week. One of the reasons for this is to raise awareness for the Youth Fund for Sports & Culture, says Ingrid: "Of course, there are flyers and information materials at the events, but at a Cruyff Court like this, it's not easy to start that conversation. You also don't know who might need help. The Youth Fund's intermediaries are also present at the schools; they know the children better, which makes contact easier." Zinder also involves the schools in developing the guest lectures. "We want the children to really get acquainted with the activities, so we offer a series of them, not just one-off workshops."

Youth workers involved

During the event, Mozaïek helps neighborhood well-being raise awareness of the Youth Fund. "All sorts of young people come to the Cruyff Court to play sports, and that's not possible right now. Mozaïek's youth workers explain what we're doing. You often see something wonderful happen, because these young people also see the potential in arts and culture and become interested. And because the youth workers know the neighborhood well, they bring flyers to local residents who might benefit from the Youth Fund's help."

Art and culture are for everyone

Relatively few children participate in arts and culture with funding from the Youth Fund for Sports & Culture. "Sometimes people might think it's too expensive and therefore not within their reach. But that's not the case! With the Youth Fund's help, every child can participate in culture; we want to tell as many people as possible. So, to parents with limited funds, I'd like to say: explore what's possible, and I hope that as many intermediaries and others as possible will point this out to them. Let your child discover what's available for free at Cultuur@Cruyff Courts, or perhaps request a trial lesson. If your child enjoys it, the Youth Fund is there for you if there's not enough money!"
