In Rotterdam, one of the poorest cities in the Netherlands, approximately 25,000 children and young people are growing up in families where financial worries are a daily occurrence. Parents often don't see the opportunity to let their children join a club or association outside of school. It's especially important for this group to participate in sports, music, or art lessons. Sports and play have a positive effect on their mental and physical health, but they also offer them a safe place in the neighborhood where they can make new friends. It teaches them to win and lose together, to forge new friendships, to make their own choices, and thus to build self-confidence. These are important building blocks for their future prospects.
In 2024, the Rotterdam Youth Fund for Sports and Culture paid the dues for their sports clubs, music, or other cultural lessons for 7,838 children and young people. This relieves a burden on parents and contributes to equal opportunities for children and young people in Rotterdam!
