“Even in private life I will always help”

Nadia Cairo has been active as a parent and child advisor in the Zuidoost district for 28 years. She serves the Municipality of Amsterdam as a support network for parents and children struggling in various areas. For almost 10 years, she has submitted between twenty and fifty applications annually to the Amsterdam Youth Sports Fund. Thanks in part to this impressive number, Nadia was named Intermediary of the Year.

Nadia radiates energy and positivity. She attributes this primarily to the social aspect. "My motivation for continuing in this work is that I'm a sociable person and find it important to help people. Even in my private life, I will always help."

In her work, Nadia naturally also encounters challenging issues. This is often because poverty-related issues are difficult for some people to discuss. "When I feel the resistance of people who aren't open to help, it's difficult for me to work." Nadia recognizes that she plays an important role in this process, but also realizes that she has no influence on what people do with her support. "My role is temporary; people have to move forward on their own afterward."

The Youth Sports Fund has been receiving many applications through Nadia for years, making her a crucial link for the JFSA. Nadia herself believes it's especially important that children who can't access the usual facilities can also participate in sports. "I see how much it means to a child to be a member of a sports club."
