De Helmondse Mitchell (15) zit in het 3e jaar van de MAVO. En daarna? Sportleraar worden, een eigen sportschool starten of…het theater in. Mitchell werkt er hard voor. Twee keer per week gaat hij naar stijldansen en iedere zaterdag is hij te vinden in de Topklas van de RTL Musicalacademie in Den Bosch. Het gezin gaat door een moeilijke periode, Mitchell’s moeder overleed in de zomer van 2018. Dansen en zingen helpt Mitchell zich te uiten. De ontmoeting met singer/songwriter en ambassadeur van het Jeugdfonds Sport & Cultuur Miss Montreal zorgde voor een stroomversnelling.

“Mitchell is geen prater,” zegt Theo over zijn zoon. “Daarom vind ik het zo fijn dat hij een uitlaatklep heeft in het dansen en zingen.” Mitchell begon op zijn 7^th al met stijldansen, geen voor de hand liggende keus voor een klein jongetje. “Mijn zus zat op stijldansen,” vertelt Mitchell. “Ik ging een keer kijken en vond het meteen heel leuk. Ik hou van bewegen en vond het er mooi uitzien. Ik train zo’n zes uur per week voor stijldansen, doe mee aan wedstrijden en op zaterdag ben ik bijna de hele dag op de musicalschool.”

Vader Theo steunt zijn zoon volop. “Mijn andere zoon en dochter zijn volwassen en doen hun eigen dingen. Ik kan er dus volop voor Mitchell zijn. Zo probeer ik altijd mee te gaan naar wedstrijden. Dat is niet altijd gemakkelijk want ik draai ploegendiensten. Maar meestal lukt het wel.” Behalve het plezier in het dansen heeft Mitchell dankzij de stijldans en musicallessen ook een hechte vriendenclub. “Zij weten ook van mijn moeder en dat helpt me. Ik kan gewoon mezelf zijn. Het is niet gemakkelijk voor me om mijn emoties te uiten maar in het dansen en zingen kan ik veel kwijt. Dat helpt me echt.”

Mama was erbij

De moeder van Mitchell was dol op stijldansen en musical en apetrots op haar dansende en zingende zoon. “Mijn moeder is voordat ze overleed nog naar een voorstelling komen kijken,” vertelt Mitchell. “Ze lag in het ziekenhuis maar met hulp van Stichting Ambulance Wens werd ze per ambulance met papa en oma naar Almere gebracht om de voorstelling te zien.” Theo is er nog steeds van onder de indruk: “Het was geweldig zoals de musicalschool en Ambulance Wens het geregeld hebben. Zo bijzonder.”

Alle beetjes helpen

Lessen volgen, trainen, naar wedstrijden gaan. En niet te vergeten de danskleding voor de wedstrijden. Mitchell laat de kleding zien: een pak voor algemeen stijldansen en een pak voor Latin. Theo: “Met die kleding doet hij wel een paar jaar, het zijn vooral de schoenen die duur zijn. De kleding, lessen en reiskosten, dat telt wel aan, oma sponsort regelmatig en het Jeugdfonds Sport & Cultuur helpt bij de lessen. Alle beetjes helpen. Ondanks dat we het niet breed hebben, wil ik de kinderen graag zoveel mogelijk kansen geven.”

In the spotlight!

Najaar 2018 werd Mitchell aan ambassadeur Sanne Hans, aka Miss Montreal, gekoppeld voor een fotoshoot voor het Jeugdfonds Sport & Cultuur. Van het een kwam het ander en in oktober stond hij naast Sanne op het podium tijdens Festyland en zaten ze op 7 november samen aan tafel bij RTL Late Night om te vertellen over het Jeugdfonds Sport & Cultuur. “Ik kende Miss Montreal natuurlijk al van de radio en zo,” zegt Mitchell. “Het verbaasde me dat ik gevraagd werd voor de fotoshoot maar ik wilde  natuurlijk graag meedoen! De foto werd op het podium gemaakt vóór een optreden van Sanne. En toen vroeg ze me tijdens het optreden ook nog op het podium! Blijkbaar had RTL Late Night dat opgepikt want een week later zaten we aan tafel.

Sanne is zo aardig, we mochten ook naar Bierpop komen, daar kregen we echt een VIP behandeling.” Theo: “Sanne vroeg aan Mitchell wat hij het liefste deed. Toen ze hoorde dat hij graag zingt, nodigde ze hem uit om tijdens de komende theatertour ook samen iets te zingen. Dat gaat in april in Eindhoven gebeuren.” “Ik vind het wel spannend, maar gelukkig heb ik al veel ervaring met optreden,” lacht Mitchell.

Ook vader Theo maakt nu dingen mee die hij niet had kunnen bedenken. “Ik gun het hem zo, ik zet alles op alles om hem te steunen en overal bij te zijn. En eerlijk gezegd vind ik het zelf ook prachtig. Zijn moeder had dit ook fantastisch gevonden. Als Mitchell dit niet gehad had, had hij zich in zijn schulp teruggetrokken. Dan had hij alleen maar op zijn kamer gezeten. Dankzij het dansen en musical heeft hij een hechte vriendenkring en maakt bijzondere dingen mee.”

We have a special bond with actress and singer Soraya Gerrits. We first spoke with her in 2018 and have been following her career with pride. Soraya graduated in 2021 from the Musical Theatre program at Fontys University of the Arts in Tilburg. The beginning of a wonderful career. In 2024, she will play one of the leading roles in Eiffel, the musical. Previously, she played the lead role of Sophie in the updated version of the musical MAMMA MIA! with our ambassador Brigitte Heitzer as her stage mother, Donna. They also starred together in the musical Diana & Zonen in 2021, and Soraya played the lead role in the musical The Prom.

I didn't want it any other way

From a young age, dancing and singing were Soraya's favorite things. When she was about eight, she spontaneously performed at a birthday party, and her talent and joy were evident. Seeing the musical Mary Poppins did the rest. "I realized I didn't have to choose; I could sing, dance, and act." She started in Amersfoort, where she took singing, dancing, and acting lessons for years at a theater school. At 15^th She attended the preparatory program at the Rotterdam Conservatory, where she completed the HAVO Music and Dance program. Later, she added Saturday classes at the preparatory program in Tilburg. This meant traveling six days a week from her hometown of Huis ter Heide to Rotterdam and Tilburg. "It was very tough; I often spent six hours a day on the train. But I didn't want anything else." When she was sixteen, she participated in the TV program 'New Musical Star,' an NPO program searching for new musical talent, where she finished in the top three. Soraya: "It was a fantastic experience. I had the opportunity to work with all kinds of musical stars, including Celinde Schoenmaker, my idol. It's the first time I've truly been professionally involved in the field I so desperately want to pursue."

To persevere

For Soraya's parents, the lessons and travel were expensive, and there came a time when it became difficult to afford them. "We had a low income and a talented child. It costs a lot of money to give your child every opportunity, but she was so eager," says Soraya's mother. "People in the industry kept telling us she had talent. So it wasn't about a hobby, but about her future, and we didn't want to take that away from her. At that time, our family was going through a difficult time, but I saw how her passion helped Soraya get through it. Despite the sadness, she persevered. It made her stronger, and that helped us as parents too. That's why it never occurred to us to say we could barely afford it and that she had to stop. We sought help from all sorts of agencies, but there was nothing for children like Soraya."

Actually it couldn't be

Making Soraya's dream come true demanded a lot from the whole family, and Soraya is acutely aware of that. She bursts into tears as she recounts: "It was actually impossible. If my parents had thrown in the towel, I wouldn't have made it. It motivates me even more. It was pretty intense, and knowing your parents are so supportive—they've done so much for you. And we succeeded. I have the best parents ever, but it was incredibly difficult. I had to make sure I was doing everything right to take the next step."

Help from the Youth Fund

Fortunately, Soraya's mother discovered the Utrecht Youth Sports & Culture Fund. And although not all costs could be covered, the contribution helped. "It helped enormously and I'm so happy that we were able to receive that support," says Soraya's mother. "Jolanda, the coordinator of the Youth Fund Sports & Culture Utrecht, has always done everything possible for Soraya, and we are so grateful for that. When Soraya was accepted in Tilburg, I immediately called her to tell her that, thanks in part to the fund, Soraya could make her dream come true.
