Intermediary Jeroen Ruijters: "Always take your flyers with you!"

Intermediaries are essential for ensuring that all children can participate in sports and cultural activities. We regularly feature one of the Gelderland Youth Fund's top performers in short questions. This time, it's Jeroen Ruijters.

Tell us something about your work as an intermediary?

I'm a youth worker and youth coach for the Municipality of Duiven. In my work, I frequently interact with young people. Many young people in the Municipality of Duiven already belong to a sports club or participate in cultural activities. But for those young people struggling financially at home, I want to bridge the gap to community life through the Youth Fund for Sports & Culture. I represent the Youth Fund as an intermediary during network meetings. I hang posters at various organizations in the Municipality of Duiven (schools, general practitioners, social services, etc.) and distribute flyers at events (markets, festivals, etc.).

Why are you an intermediary?

I believe sports and culture are important tools for connecting with young people. Through sports and culture, young people can develop themselves in many ways.

Why is the Youth Fund so important?

Within my target group of youth and young people, there are also plenty of young people from vulnerable families. The Youth Fund for Sports and Culture offers opportunities for this. We're currently seeing many financial challenges for families. In my opinion, offering sports and culture to young people shouldn't be the victims of this.

Why are sports and culture so important for children?

Sports and culture are a great way to relax; an outlet. If young people can't find this in sports and culture, they'll seek it out in other, perhaps less safe, ways. A sports club or cultural association provides structure, discipline, and helps young people develop a sense of responsibility. It's a way to develop social skills. It keeps young people physically and mentally fit.

What is your best moment?

A mother of three was about to withdraw her children from her soccer club due to financial difficulties. Thanks to the help of the Youth Fund, she was able to re-enroll her children. She was very grateful for that.

Do you have any tips for other intermediaries?

Always bring your flyers and posters, and present the Youth Sports & Culture Fund at all networking events you attend. If you have direct contact with young people, always ask if they're already members of a club.

What is your wish for the future?

That every child in the Netherlands, regardless of their home situation, has the opportunity to participate in sports and culture.
