Intermediary Karien Knoester: “It's wonderful to help families make something possible that seems impossible.”
Intermediaries are essential for ensuring that all children can participate in sports and cultural activities. We regularly feature one of the Gelderland Youth Fund's top performers in short questions. This time, it's Karien Knoester.
Tell us something about yourself and your work as an intermediary?
I work as a children's worker at the Rijnstad Foundation in the Malburgen neighborhood of Arnhem. Our work supports children in their development. We do this primarily through a variety of activities, focusing on social-emotional development, language development, and a healthy lifestyle. We also play an important role in identifying and supporting parents in raising their children. As an intermediary, I help parents who find it difficult or impossible financially to allow their children to participate in cultural or sports activities. Sometimes parents are referred to me, and sometimes parents come to me with questions. I also inform parents about the possibilities of using the Youth Fund. After meeting with parents, I process the application and report back to them on the outcome.
Why are you an intermediary?
I believe it's important that sports and culture are accessible to everyone. For children's development, it's crucial to discover their potential, their likes and dislikes, and their talents. Within children's programs, there's plenty of opportunity for children to explore various sports and cultural activities. I also believe it's important that children have opportunities to pursue something that truly resonates with them. Finances shouldn't be a barrier to success.
Why are sports and culture so important for children?
Participation in sports and culture is important for children's development. Besides developing skills in a specific sport or cultural activity, the social aspect is also important. Making new contacts, making friends, interacting with peers, and everything that entails.
What is your best moment?
I especially enjoy helping families make something possible that seems impossible. For example, I recently visited a family with three children, two of whom were eligible for a grant from the Youth Fund. Together with the mother, I explored other options in the neighborhood for the third child. This way, all three children could still participate in the activities they wanted.
Do you have any tips for other intermediaries?
Make sure people know where to find you as an intermediary and that you have a broad network yourself and are aware of the various options available. This way, you can best support families and, where necessary, point them to other options.
What is your wish for the future?
That every child has the opportunity to participate in sports and cultural activities.
