On Monday, November 18, group 5 of the Driesprong in Soest received a rap workshop from the Youth Fund ambassador Jermain BridgewaterThe event was inspired by the Youth Fund Sidewalk Chalk Competition during the Podiade in Soest. Three jury members from Kunstenhuis Idea, among others, selected Juliette's (8-year-old) drawing as the winner from a field of 28. Cultural broker Anita Vreugdenhil recently presented the award to Juliette in the presence of her classmates and teacher Robina.

Rhythm, rhymes and rapping

Jermain began the rap workshop by explaining the history of rap and its various styles. He also played some of my own work. The students then worked on counting bars and the art of rhyming. At the end of the workshop, under Jermain's guidance, they created a real rap song with the theme "Vacation." The children were very enthusiastic and, according to Jermain, have real talent.

Art practice is important

The sidewalk chalk contest was incredibly inspiring for the participating children. With a rap workshop as a prize, the children learned to use language creatively. Learning to associate with language is very positive for the development of students this age (8 years old), says teacher Robina. For several years now, our school has been an intermediary for the Utrecht Youth Sports and Culture Fund. You can see how much children benefit from being able to play sports or take music lessons.
