Participating thanks to the Youth Fund: 'My children have always dreamed of these activities'

In the province of Groningen, one in seven children grows up in poverty. These children are less likely to participate in sports at a club, exacerbating the lack of exercise in the region. FC Groningen supports the Youth Fund for Sports & Culture to help these children participate in sports and combat this lack of exercise.

Adnan and his family have lived in the Netherlands since 2018. His children love sports, but due to financial constraints, they can't participate in everything. He believes it's crucial that his children can release their energy in a healthy way. With the help of the Youth Fund for Sports & Culture, Adnan's children have the opportunity to participate in sports.

Children growing up in poverty often need a little support. The Youth Fund for Sports & Culture offers this support by covering their sports club memberships. This allows all children to discover what they enjoy, have the opportunity to make new friends, and in short, expand their horizons.

Sufficient exercise is important for physical and mental health. FC Groningen believes that sports should be accessible to every child and has partnered with the Groningen Youth Fund for Sports and Culture. Simon Cageling, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at FC Groningen, emphasizes the importance of the Youth Fund for Sports and Culture for children in the FC's hinterland.

At FC Groningen, we're fighting against lack of exercise in our region, which is a huge problem, far greater than the national average. Every child should have access to sports, and we believe there should be no barriers to doing so. We support the Youth Fund for Sports & Culture because they ensure that children growing up in poverty can still access sports.

Parents cannot submit an application to the Youth Sports & Culture Fund themselves. Applications for funding are always submitted through an intermediary, such as a teacher, neighborhood sports coach, neighborhood social team, or debt counselor. For Adnan's children, it was Ingrid, the intermediary, who brought a smile to the faces of both parents and children.

The Youth Sports & Culture Fund gives many children in the city and surrounding area the opportunity to participate in sports. Last year, 3,500 children from the province of Groningen, like Adnan's children, got active.
