How are things going now with… DURON

Duron has been the youngest ambassador (15) of the Youth Fund Sport & Culture Amsterdam since January 2024. After a year of being an ambassador, we wanted to know what he experienced.

Last interview was in January 2024, how have you been doing since then?

Awesome!!! I recently released a new song. I spent a few months working on it with producer-songwriter Hansen Tomas, who also collaborated on the song "Magic." He creates the melody first, and then we come up with the lyrics together. It's called "Party Tonight" and it's about going out with friends. I have a small group of friends who I hang out with the most. Jamy and Mia are part of that group; I see or speak to them almost daily. They live a few streets away from me. We share the same taste in music: K-pop. I like different kinds of music, like Suzan and Freek, Usher, Zoë Tauran, and Jay Jawson, but I listen to a lot of K-pop music. My favorite K-pop artists are Stray Kids and Blackpink. Next week, I'm coincidentally going to the Stray Kids concert, and next month I'm going to Enhypen with Jamy and Mia. We're so excited. It's going to be a real party. I also went to Usher's concert; it was so cool. He's a true performer. I'll definitely learn from that.

You're being asked a lot these days, which events have you performed at?

I've performed at a lot of venues, to name a few: Festival Trek Amsterdam and Utrecht, Nobel in Leiden, Kwaku Festival, Het Grote Junior Songfestival in Ahoy, Tina Festival, etc. I'm approached by my manager, Bert Jan of Youngstarz Agency, or I get a request directly on my social media. I always enjoy performing, actually. I'm a bit nervous going into a performance, but once I'm on stage, all that tension melts away.

“As an ambassador, I try to promote the Youth Fund wherever possible. to raise awareness, for example at the opening of the Amsterdam Games in the Olympic Stadium for many primary schools and at Move Amsterdam for the 25th anniversary of the Youth Fund, and of course on my social media.” – Duron

What did you enjoy doing most?

Still, the latest video for my song "Party Tonight" is here. My followers (12,000) are also eager to hear something new. I'm getting some really great reactions, and to my surprise, people even started talking to me at school. They said they thought my music was cool, which I really didn't expect. It makes me so happy. You feel like it's much bigger than you imagined.

You are now also chairman of the children's council, tell us something about that?

We're discussing how the Youth Fund can reach children of our generation more broadly. There are five of us, all with different backgrounds: dance, football, singing, etc., but the goal is the same: to raise awareness for the Youth Fund so that many more children will sign up. We've created a TikTok account, and the plan is to post videos showcasing all sorts of fun sports and cultural activities we do.

“As a children's council we have a lot of great ideas, but you'll hear about them later!” – Duron

Can you do all those activities? How do you combine your studies with school? How do you do it all?

I'm doing really well in school. I'm starting my final year of high school after the summer holidays. If I have a performance or appointment, as an artist, it can sometimes fall during school hours. So far, anything that falls during school hours, my parents ask for leave. In a year's time, I hope to attend the Herman Brood Academy. I know they don't get accepted very often. But... you never know...

Luckily, my mom is my secretary, haha. She helps me with my planner; otherwise, it's really impossible. I sometimes promise four things at once; without her, it would be a real mess...

What would you still like to do or wish for the Youth Fund for Sports & Culture?

As the youngest ambassador, I'd love to organize a big event that's fun for the kids and where parents can learn more about the Youth Fund. A kind of festival with workshops, so the kids can see and experience all there is to do for them in Amsterdam.

“Children don't have to be ashamed of not having much money, everyone should and can participate!” – Duron

Finally, why did you want to do a photoshoot at the DeLaMar theater?

The very first time I performed on a large stage through the Youth Fund was at the DeLaMar Theatre. The Youth Fund regularly organizes a benefit performance called "From Passion to Stage." You see all sorts of children perform, and as ambassador, I was asked to do the presentation and introduce everyone. At the end, I performed my song "Energy." The children in the audience loved it and happily danced and sang along to my music. I'll never forget that performance on the DeLaMar stage.

"I really see myself on stage later as an artist. Making it big in the Netherlands and abroad—that's my dream!!!" – Duron

"My latest song, Party Tonight, is in the Kidstop20. I'd love it if you voted for me!" – Duron
