Education strike has positive effects for the Breda Youth Fund for Sports & Culture
Participation in the national education strike in March of this year by several teachers from Breda schools under the SKVOB board resulted in a substantial donation for two organizations. The board and the strikers had agreed that the withheld salaries from that day would be donated to two charities, including the Breda Youth Sports & Culture Fund.
Chair Annemarie Onsman and coordinator Hanneke van den Boom of the Breda Youth Sports & Culture Fund received a check for €4,250 from SKVOB Executive Board Chairman Berend Buddingh at the Mencia de Mendoza Lyceum.
Although the SKVOB board and the strikers agreed on the strike's purpose, the board felt a strike was not the right means. Therefore, the salaries of the teachers who went on strike were withheld. The withheld strike funds were therefore donated to the two charities suggested after an appeal to all employees.
The Breda Youth Sports & Culture Fund provides sports and cultural opportunities to children and young people aged 2 to 18 from families living in the municipality of Breda who lack sufficient funding to participate in sports and cultural activities. Annemarie Onsman, chair of the Culture Fund, said: "What a fantastic gesture from SKVOB. This will allow us to allow another 12 to 15 children to participate in sports and cultural activities this year."
